Sunday, August 23 - Depart USA for Tanzania

Depart your home city on your overnight flight to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

 

Monday, August 24 - Arrive Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

Jambo na Karibu! Hello and welcome to Tanzania. On arrival in Kilimanjaro, after clearing immigration and customs formalities, claim your luggage and proceed through the arrivals hall.  You will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy dinner (on own) and your first night under the star-studded African skies.  

ACCOMMODATIONS:  ELEWANA ARUSHA COFFEE LODGE

Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge is hidden among one of Tanzania’s largest coffee plantations and beautifully positioned below the rugged peak of Mount Meru. The theme of coffee is never far away at Arusha Coffee Lodge as evidenced by the beautifully designed plantation suites and rooms, all adorned with comfortable furnishings. Each room features an ensuite bathroom including a triple-headed shower, bathrobes and slippers, hairdryer, electronic safe, mini-bar, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities. The homey feel of the lodge is by no means accidental as the origins of the homestead continue to emit glimpses of times-gone-by. The main Plantation House is home to an à la carte restaurant, an intimate bar and a cozy lounge, all of which have inviting open log fires. There are two boutiques, an enclosed swimming pool and a popular garden terrace. The common areas offer complimentary Wi-Fi.

 

Tuesday, August 25 - Arusha/Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will be met at the lodge by a Ranger Safaris driver-guide with a private 4x4 vehicle.  Following a short safari briefing you will enjoy the scenic drive to the Karatu highlands, arriving at the lodge in time for lunch.  After lunch the rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy facilities at the lodge (some optional activities offered at the lodge may involve additional costs – payable directly by clients), followed by dinner. Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro is located within a 1500-acre coffee estate, surrounded by flowering gardens and age-old trees. Reminiscent of an elegant up-country Cape Dutch estate, the luxurious cottages are positioned to ensure that every guest experiences the natural beauty of the landscape, as well as the privacy and intimacy characteristic of an old world manor home. Each cottage has its own private entrance and adjoining sun terrace. A double open-fronted log-burning fireplace divides the room's interior. The ensuite bathroom has a Victorian-style bathtub, as well as twin vanity basins and a large rainfall shower. Cottage amenities include a hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room electronic safe, universal power adapters and charging points. The main Manor House features fireplace lounges, a formal dining room, dining conservatory, bar, private wine cellar, library with Internet, home theatre, snooker room, a massage room, swimming pool, and horse stables. Wi-Fi is available at the main Manor House.

 

Wednesday, August 26 - Ngorongoro Crater

A highlight awaits you this morning as you depart to explore what is commonly referred to as the World’s largest natural wildlife arena. After an early breakfast, you will drive to the park gate and descend through the early morning mist and 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs to open grassland and some sandy dunes. While in the crater, you will enjoy a picnic lunch amid a truly unique wildlife experience. You return to the camp by late afternoon/early evening. (B,L,D)

Thursday, August 27 - Kilimanjaro/Nairobi

After an early breakfast, enjoy the scenic drive back to Arusha. You will have a brief stop at Arusha Coffee Lodge for lunch (or to collect picnic lunches) before being transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight to Nairobi. You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. (B,L,D)

Hemingways Nairobi is a small luxury plantation-style hotel in the peaceful suburb of Karen. The beautifully furnished rooms pay homage to the classic elegance of vintage East African safaris. The spacious ensuite bedrooms feature bathrooms of hand-cut Italian marble, vaulted ceilings and balconies overlooking the Ngong Hills. An attentive butler is on hand to complete the luxurious experience. Meals are a delightful affair, with fresh baked breads and pastries from the hotel’s own patisserie. The Brasserie serves the best steaks in Kenya, grilled on an imported charcoal oven. Menus are contemporary in style, using locally sourced artisan producers and accompanied by the finest selection of wines. Additional amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, a bar, a wine cellar, and a Spa.

 

Friday, August 28 - Nairobi

Follow in the footsteps of Karen Blixen as you travel along Langata, through Ngong Hills and Ngong Village and continue to the Karen Blixen Museum, contained in the house that was her home for many years. The tour continues with a drive through the residential area of Langata to the Giraffe Center, situated in a rare indigenous forest on Nairobi’s western boundary. Enjoy lunch at Tamambo Karen Blixen Coffee Garden Restaurant. After lunch, visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The organization works in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and hand rears orphaned baby elephants and rhinos, so that they can return to the wild herds of Tsavo when grown. Continue to Utamaduni, meaning “cultural heritage”. Utamaduni is a converted house containing an array of arts and crafts shops. After a day of sightseeing, you will be transferred back to your hotel. (B,L)

Saturday, August 29 - Nairobi / Amboseli National Park

After a delicious breakfast at Hemingways Nairobi, check-out and transfer to Wilson Airport Nairobi, the gateway to flying safaris in Kenya. Your safari takes off with a flight to the Amboseli National Park, situated at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here, the snowcapped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro rises above floating clouds, dominating every aspect of Amboseli. Upon arrival at the Amboseli airstrip, you will be met by the Tortilis Camp rangers and vehicles and transferred to camp. Enjoy your first game drive in Kenya enroute. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive in Amboseli, where the wildlife is inevitably picturesque against the massive backdrop of the snow-clad 19,000-foot mountain. Return to camp for dinner. ACCOMMODATIONS:  TORTILIS CAMP 

Tortilis Camp is named after the local Acacia Tortilis tree, and it is situated just outside the park in private unspoiled woodland. The thatch-covered tents are large and spacious, and feature king or twin beds, elegant ensuite bathrooms and private verandas. With Mt. Kilimanjaro peering down over the entire camp, each of the tents has glorious views of the mountain. Tortilis Camp prides itself in serving fresh homegrown salads and vegetables from its healthy vegetable garden. From impressive bush breakfasts out in the middle of the plains, to homemade pasta and bread at the camp, the Tortilis chefs excel with every meal. The camp guides are based in camp and know their backyard intimately. More than half of the guides are Maasai, and together, have combined guiding experience of 80 years.

 

Sunday, August 30 - Amboseli National Park

Rise early for a game-drive and enjoy breakfast out in the wilds of Africa. Tortilis is strategically located for you to view Mt. Kilimanjaro which seems to tower over the rest of the world. On a clear day, you can almost touch the snow-capped tip. You will take another game drive to explore more of Amboseli before you return to camp in time for lunch. Stretch your legs in the afternoon on a walking safari and watch the sun go down over the Amboseli plains, while Kilimanjaro provides a beautiful backdrop for many a photo enthusiast. (B,L,D)

Monday, August 31 - Amboseli National Park / Loisaba Conservancy

This morning, you will transfer to the airstrip in Amboseli and fly to Loisaba with a layover at Nairobi Wilson. Take in the scenic views on your game drive enroute to Loisaba Lodo Springs, where you'll be greeted with a mouth-watering lunch and sweeping views that reach across the magical landscape of northern Kenya, stretching out to Mount Kenya.

As the day winds down, set out on a breathtaking evening game drive to discover the secrets of this ancient landscape and its rich wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants, giraffes, lions, and more as you explore the wonders of Loisaba Conservancy. (B,L,D)

Loisaba Conservancy is a success story of conservation. It is a practical project in sustainable land-use and guests see firsthand how this basic premise infiltrates every part of the ranch. Home to elephants, a healthy population of lions, the rare wild dog, and an abundance of other species, Loisaba is a prime example of successful collaboration between conservation, communities, ranching, and tourism. The local Samburu and Maasai tribes are full partners in the project so your visit not only conserves the environment but also pays for the education and welfare of the people who call this remote and magnificent region home.  (B,L,D)

Tuesday, September 1 - Loisaba Conservancy

Set out on a one-of-a-kind walking safari with expert Samburu guides before returning to camp for breakfast. After a sumptuous lunch, choose between an afternoon game drive or joining the anti-poaching sniffer dog team. The dedicated anti-poaching team hosts a thrilling tracking demonstration. You'll be amazed by the four sniffer dogs and their skilled handlers as they lead you on an exciting journey through the bush. Finish the day with a sundowner in the bush, followed by a delectable dinner under the stars.  (B,L,D)

Wednesday, September 2 - Loisaba Conservancy / Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at camp, before a thrilling game drive enroute to Loisaba airstrip. Board your flight to the iconic Masai Mara, then enjoy lunch at Sand River Masai Mara Camp. Set out on an unforgettable afternoon game drive, looking out for majestic wildlife, before sundowners in the bush. Finally, return to camp for a delicious dinner and prepare for another exciting day.  (B,L,D)

One of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves, the magical Maasai Mara holds a diverse concentration of wildlife and is famous for the abundance of big cats: lion, leopard, cheetah, and the great wildebeest migration. It is also home to the Maasai people, well known for their distinctive custom and dress.

Elewana Sand River Masai Mara is located on the banks of the Sand River, within the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp replicates the heyday of exclusive tented camps of the late 1920’s. The spacious ensuite tents feature a bedroom and lounge, hot and cold running water, flush toilet, a bathtub, outdoor shower, private deck, fan, safe, mini bar, hairdryer, desk and mosquito net. The camp is divided into two separate but adjoining campsites, with each area possessing its own designated dining and public areas, thereby creating an increased sense of exclusivity and privacy. Additional facilities include a refreshing swimming pool, lounge, bar, and gift shop. Wi-Fi and charging facilities are available in the rooms and in the main areas. Thursday, September 3 AND Friday, September 4 - Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Each day in the Mara will be dramatically different from the next. The drama of the Mara is never-ending, and the cycle of life and death is seemingly endless. It is this sheer magnetism that has captivated all of us and will captivate you. Each day, enjoy morning and afternoon game viewing activities. At the end of the day, return to your camp for a sumptuous meal before relaxing in the lounge area to share the day’s adventure with fellow travelers. (B,L,D)

Saturday, September 5 - Maasai Mara Game Reserve / Nairobi, Kenya 

After breakfast you will be transferred to Mara Keekorok Airstrip for your flight to Nairobi Wilson Airport.  You will be met on arrival and transferred to Nairobi International Airport for your international flights back to the United States with life-changing memories of your African experience. (For those with late flights a day room will be provided near the airport.) (B,L)

 

This luxury East African safari includes all accommodations, transportation within Africa, all meals listed on the itinerary, tours, entry fees, and safari guides throughout the trip.

Not included are international airfare, visas, passports, inoculations, baggage charges, personal items, travel insurance, and other items not mentioned above.
